Retrospective 2000s – Umoja House – Dar Es Salaam

Working for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office BWS provided Project Quanitity Surveying Services on the joint High Commission and Embassy facilities in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The facility is a joint diplomatic building for the British, French, Dutch, German governments, the EEC and for DIFID.

Built to European standards, in one of the poorest countries of the world, the architect created acceptable internal conditions, with due regard to sustainable energy sources, in an extremely aggressive climate. The 7000m2 building employs passive environmental controls to maintain comfortable naturally ventilated interior spaces. The office floors are necessarily set behind a secure wall. To meet the budget materials were sourced locally wherever possible and local contractors undertook much of the work.
